Sonny Okosun Is Dead, (R.I.P.)

Sonny Okosun

Legendary Highlife/Gospel singer Sonny Okosun, whose songs we love so much has passed away. The Legend died in the US at the age of 61 of a disease that had just started as an infection in his colon months ago. may his soul rest in perfect peace. Confirmed from Niyi Tabiti at http://niyitabiti.blogspot.com/2008/...n-veteran.html
"Sunny Okosun needs no introduction as a foremost Nigeria's cultural ambassador. He sang for the individual; he sang for the nation; he sang for the continent; he sang for the black peoples of the world, and he sang for a humankind that transcends racial affiliation. Sunny Okosun's music touched the soul, and constantly reminded us of our common humanity. For Okosun, there is no Negroid, Caucasian, or mongolese race. "What we have", he says, "is the human race". Okosun's functionalist aesthetics was deployed by the Nigerian government to lubricate and penetrate the hearts of Nigerians at a time when it was necessary to persuade our people to pay what was then called "Apartheid tax" as a way of combating the racial inhumanities in Southern Africa. Nigeria eventually spent the whopping sum of sixty-two billion dollars (U$D 62 bn) to secure the freedom of our relatives in Southern Africa. But no amount is too big to be spent when it comes to the liberty of humankind. Okosun sang against apartheid, against Hitler's Nazism, against war, against man's inhumanity to fellowmen. He sang of love, he sang of motherhood and the love of children. Okosun reminded us of divine presence and even as early as the 1970s he had appealed to the almighty to lift him up. Such is the arduous task of selfless cultural ambassadors who have continued to labour so hard to stabilise the larger population of our people in the midst of apparent political 'earthquakes' often deliberately inflicted on them by many of our leaders.
Even more: Okosun maintained a national presence. Born of Ishan parentage in the current Edo state, his accomplishments as a musician far supersede any tribal definition. He sang in English, Ishan, Igbo, Hausa, and Yoruba languages. Okosun spoke fluent Igbo, in fact better than many Igbo that I have met at home and abroad. He grew up in Enugu and for many years shared a flat with the other cultural symbol of our nation, Pete Edochie, who has carved for himself an enviable space in Nollywood. As a divine messenger, he reminded the Igbo and the rest of Nigerians that our God is supreme: "Zigara ha ozi. Gwa ha na Chi anyi ka nma". When it was necessary to mobilise the Nigerian nation once again through MAMSER, the Federal Government of Nigeria quickly remembered Sunny Okosun, and sought his services through the then director of MAMSER, Prof Jerry Gana. Okosun has served Nigeria in many such moments of national emergency by using his chosen profession to the service of humanity and the nation." - http://nigeriaworld.com/articles/2008/feb/223.html .And we will never forget him

LAST INTERVIEW WITH THE LEGEND

Interviewed by Ogbonna Amadi on Friday, 11 January 2008

What is the use of the Order Of the Niger Awards (OON) bestowed on me
by government, if it can’t be translated into cash? And where are all
those Nigerians who I thought were my friends?

Where are all those Governors who gave me red carpet treatment when I sang at their parties?

Those
were the questions of lamentation from ailing Evangelist Sonny Okosuns
moment before he boarded his flight back to America from where he hopes
to go to India to seek help for the strange ailment that has reduced
the once vibrant singer to a mere bags of bones.

He spoke to
Entertainment Editor, Ogbonna Amadi at the international wing of the
Murtala The Great Prophet Airport moment before his flight was
announced.

How are you doing?

I’m doing good, I bless God, he is good, he is the sovereign God.

How are you feeling?

I feel under aged, I feel thirty.

How true is it that you are going to India to seek medical help?

That
is very true. As soon as I get back to America, I will leave for India
where I hope to seek further medical assistance for my failing health.
Although I’m feeling okay already, I don’t want to take chances, for
its taken my faith in God and the efforts of doctors in America to have
gotten me this far.

The last time we spoke over the phone, you
said God has been the one taking care of your medical expenses, so who
did God send this time to help.

I give praises to God Almighty
who brought a man in the person of an Indian, called Patrick Fernandez
into my life. This man who God showed to me in Port Harcourt
volunteered to take care of all my medical expenses in a hospital in
Bombay, India.

Mr Fernandez’s gesture brought tears to my eyes
and I asked. What is the use of the Order Of the Niger Awards (OON)
bestowed on me by government, if it can’t be translated into cash? And
where are all those Nigerians who I thought were my friends? Where are
all those Governors who gave me red carpet treatment when I sang at
their parties?

What happens to your congregation now that you have finally relocated to America?

I’ve
not relocated to America. I’m only there because I’m still under
medication. As for the Church, nobody owns the Church and neither is
the Church mine. The Church belongs to God and any body who says it’s
my church is a liar. That shows that whether I’m there or not, God is
in control. Since I left, the Church has remained intact.

You have been here for about three to four days now, have you been to your church?
I have sent a message.

You were in the studio the last time recording new songs, so when is the album going to be ready?
Well, I’m getting a good recording label to release it

In Nigeria or abroad?

Both in Nigeria and abroad. I’m going to release it immediately after the new year.

Why would you want to use another recording label after all, you have Ivory Music?

I’m no longer with Ivory Music.

But I thought you were at one time a director of the company?

Well,
I’m not a director and I’m not feeling like a director. I don’t want
anything. I know God is in control of everything Ido. I don’t want to
talk about Ivory Music.

What about your works there?

Well,
my works are there. I never had any contract with Ivory so what ever
jobs I gave to them I gave out of interest because I didn’t want to
move from one place to another.

Is the album Songs of Praise one of those you recorded outside contract.?

No, I was on contract when I did Songs of Praise.

What happened to your royalties, are they still coming?

The royalties are not coming.

They stopped paying you?

I don’t know why.

When was the last time they paid you your royalties?

I can’t remember that.

Your Songs of Praise album is still selling and you have never bothered to go and find out why they stopped paying you?

There
are people who pretend to be God’s people but God has a way of sorting
them out. There is no way you can hide away from God. What I mean is
that there is no way you can hide away from the truth.

Jesus
Christ told Pilate saying I come for the truth and Pilate asked him
what is the truth he didn’t answer that question because Pilate was
looking at the truth. The earth could not hold the truth and so on the
third day he bursted the earth and came out that’s how the truth is,
you can not bury the truth.

You don’t talk of politics any more?

Yes.
I’m not in politics any more, I’m now in Christ. My body is dead but
now I’m alive in Christ so I don’t talk of things that do not hold
spiritual life.

Any regret?

I don’t regret anything I did. I know I did it at the time God wanted me to do it,

It must be very expensive medically taking care of your bills, how have you been surviving?

God
is my survival and he has been taking good care of me and that is why I
say from everlasting to everlasting God is God. When you are honest and
righteous and you are in Christ, the Holy spirit will direct you in
every thing you do.

So it’s a miracle that I’m living today and
I have no regret in anything I’d done in the past. God is taking care
of me, he is a wonderful father.

You got nothing from supporting people but you got so much from being the real musician that you are?

Yes I worked hard to be a musician and at my age I’m still performing and recording.

Let’s get to your personal health ,what has the doctor been able to tell you that is exactly the problem with your health?

Well,
I had an infection in my colon but it’s clearing up . You know I’m very
strong. Anybody who has this kind of infection do not move, walk or
talk and you are on the bed until you are okay. As you can see I’m all
over the place praising God. In the book of Isaiah chapter 38 it says,

To
God the death can not celebrate and if you die, you go down into the
pit. Only the living can praise him and that is why I’m standing today.

So
God is not going to let me die but I shall live to declare the works of
the lord. So if I’m going to declare the works of the lord he will not
let me die(Psalm 118)

In all your life as a musician, what would you say is the high point of your achievement?

They
are so many things to talk about. I did not go to school but I have
three doctorate degrees. I don’t belong to any society but I have five
chieftaincy titles. I did not go to bible school, but I have a church
that I preach and sing the gospel all over the place. So I am a great
achiever, God has lifted me.

He told me in Isaiah 60 that I’m
going to make you an Eternal Excellency, the joy of many generations
and I am standing on the authority of that word.

He also told me
in the book of Joshua that where ever I step on I will posses the land
for Christ. God said in Numbers 14;28 Exactly what I hear you say I
will do so what ever I say comes to past.

Looking back, what would you say gave you the greatest joy, in terms of what you have achieved?

It
depends. God has been taking care of me since my childhood till now
and it’s a great joy. There is nothing I lack. I have large family.

I’m
not a bastard because my mother gave birth to me. I was not thrown to
the motherless baby home because God opened ways for me to know that,
in all the things that I’m doing in my life and in show business. I may
not be the best in Nigeria and in the world., I have not had any
disappointment.

I was able to tour Nigeria twenty six times ,no accidents, no death, nothing. No evil happened to me until now.

I
have done about thirty three albums which is a wonderful thing I don’t
know how many musicians have achieved that and I have performed with
other big artist in the world including Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Jimmy
Cliff, Eric Donaldson and so many of them.

Real reason I begged 50 Cent - Eedris

Real reason I begged 50 Cent - Eedris

Real reason I begged 50 Cent – Eedris Abdukareem, rapper
Edited by: TOSIN AJIRIRE

Popular hip-hop crooner, Eedris Abdukareem has revealed the real reason and people behind his reconciliation with Grammy award-winning American rapper, 50 Cent.

Eedris whose musical career took a plunge aftermath his imbroglio with 50 Cent during the Star Mega Jam in 2004 will be grateful to the organisers of Kora Award, most especially Ernest Adjovi for the planning and execution of the reconciliation coup.

According to Eedris, Kora is for the unity of African artistes, and the organisers have made it known to the world that if there is a problem between two artistes, it’s better settled than fester.
He says: "For this I want to thank the Kora organizers. A lot of people got wrong information about what went wrong between me and 50 Cent. I was blacklisted. Some people sold me out and some didn’t bother what became of me. But I want to thank the Kora people, most especially Ernest Ajovi, Teju Kareem and Mike Yomi Dada for bringing me and 50 Cent together and for shaming my enemies, and for taking me to the next level, which is a duet between me and 50 Cent very soon.
A chance of a lifetime

In spite of the fact that it’s never in a rapper’s agenda to beg and say ‘sorry’ to his counterpart, Eedris ate a humble pie and swallowed his pride as he confronted 50 Cent on stage penultimate Thursday.
When Blockbuster cornered him at the Hilton Hotel, Abuja later that day, Eedris confessed that it was a chance of a lifetime which he was not prepared to miss. According to him, he had to put his ego aside to get things right between him and 50 Cent.

He says: "Honestly, the word ‘sorry’ came from my heart because I saw it as a lifetime opportunity to reconcile with 50 Cent. I was so happy to tell him that ‘look, I don’t hate you. I did not disrespect you. I was just being myself as a professional musician, like you. I had an agreement on ground with the people that brought you here. But you didn’t understand all that went wrong and your bodyguards messed me up. But nevertheless, I am happy that you are back to Nigeria. Whatever I have done to offend you, I am sorry about it. Let’s move on, we are Africans. If not for slave trade we would have been brothers and we are still brothers’. Most people think this would never happen but it happened. I thank almighty Allah."

The King is Back
Eedris further talked about his new album entitled "The King is Back" and pet project tagged "AURE". "My new album is entitled "The King is Back". I am working with two producers and it will come out in January. It is a 14-track album. I went through a lot of dramas over the last four years. I had problems with people like former President Obasanjo and 50 Cent. I was one of the pioneers of hip hop music in Nigeria with the Remedies.

After the dramas, I went underground to cool down and to work on my new album, which will explain what people don’t really know about me. Most people have a misconception about me. They believe I am too arrogant and proud but I am just me. I am Eedris Abdukareem, I’ve just got to be myself and that’s exactly what I am doing. It’s just what I have gone underground to put together in my new album. It’s called "The King is Back". I am back for real. I’m the king.

AURE
One of the songs in the album is "Peace in the Niger Delta" which is a collaboration between me, Asari Dokubo and Festus Keyamo. This project is taking us to about nine states in the Niger Delta where we will sensitize, educate and find a way to add value to the youth of the area. The proceeds of the musical concerts will be used to build a film and music village in the Niger Delta. We are having a world press conference at the Hilton Hotel in Abuja in January while the first concert comes up in February.
My new project is AURE which means marriage in Hausa. But to me it means African United Remedy for Epidemics. What I am saying is that marriage is the only remedy for HIV/AIDS. This project is for the first lady.

Kora’s $1m prize
I am going to win the Kora’s $1m prize money. My song, "Welcome to Africa" will do the magic. It will take Kora by storm.

Gongo Aso: 9ice breaks the sophomore jinx

In recent Nigerian music history, exceptional albums have been a product of chemistry between budding artistes and equally visionary producers helming a major percentage of the affair. The industry has witnessed such synergy work with Tuface and the sublime production of OJB Jezreel. We have seen the product of geniuses at work in Asa and Cohbams. We are yet to recover from the raucous raised by D‘banj and Don Jazzy, his award winning production sidekick.

9ice

www.mytruspot.com/9ice

Going by this rationalisation, statistics somewhat favour Abolore Akande, aka 9ice, in his sophomore album, Gongo Aso. Almost 85 per cent of the songs are products of a chemistry with fellow Coded Tunes Cohort, I.D. Kabasa. By far the most anticipated in the land since the release of his monstrous hit single, Gongo Aso, a song with a buzz so enormous, it did not need a video to become a new national anthem.

Having made magic together in the moderately successful debut album, Certificate, 9ice and I.D. Kabasa are back together and this year may as well be regarded as a 9ice year. Gongo Aso bares the mind of a more mature singer learning to handle the fame and success that come with the business. He seems to be enjoying himself as he sings about it in the first words of the album, ”… me I like the kain life wey I dey live now.”

Bordering on topics like success, gratitude to God, originality, partying, women and even trying to envision his wedding day, this album is a pot-pourri of thoughts from a creative young Nigerian mind. He sings almost every song here with so much emotion, you can feel it, even when he is partying, and this he does on a good number of times in the album.

In an industry where a hit is defined as a beat that gets people dancing, a catchy hook and a new street lingo; 9ice provides that recipe with Gongo Aso, the single that has shot him up to super stardom status. Although the other party songs (Party Rider, Jule) may not be as true to this recipe, yet they get the job done.

Collaborating with Tuface Idibia and Pasuma Wonder, 9ice shows he is no pushover, as he holds his own on each duet, the dude flaunts his Street Credibility with Tuface, the otherwise cameo king, who struggles for second place as a hungry 9ice makes an all-too familiar claim, ”Don‘t doubt me, I go bring home Grammy.” In the song, he goes on to address his penchant for the use of Yoruba language by saying, ”Am made on the streets why I no go blow/originality works for me, why no go show.” Ati Jelo works better than most Fuji-laced collabos, as 9ice plays host to a surprisingly rapping Pasuma Wonder.

If this album is a bag of surprises, then the biggest surprise will be Wedding Day, where a love-drunk 9ice sings about the girl he would love to take to the altar, over a salsa flavoured instrumental. The song represents a multilingual expression for a universal institution like marriage.

For an artiste that does not sing a full sentence in pidgin English without throwing in a Yoruba proverb, non-Yoruba listeners may feel alienated. Compromising between keeping a wider fan base and maintaining his originality becomes an issue. But the artiste understands his audience is as wide as it is diverse, so he does not leave them hanging by switching to pidgin when he can.

Let‘s take a leaf from recent Nigerian music trends; albums with an overwhelmingly successful singles may most likely not spawn an equally hit song from the same album. That is, an album with a song as big as Gongo Aso, may likely not have another song as big, even with more brilliant songs. This has been proven with Olu Maintain‘s Yahoozey, Konga‘s Baby Konga, and even TY Bello‘s Greenland. This time, statistics may be tilted against him, but nevertheless, with Gongo Aso, 9ice has broken the sophomore jinx, and he makes it look so effortless.

THE ancient city of Benin last Saturday was rocked with the loud vibration of music blasting from the Sports Complex of University of Benin venue of the much hyped MTN Xtra Cool musical concert tour with 2face and friends.

Over ten thousand adult youths most of whom were students of Uniben and surrounding higher institutions thronged the mega concert venue to watch celebrity artistes that had teamed up with multiple award winning singing sensation 2Face.

The occasion was the kick off of the much publicized MTN Xtra Cool Tour with 2Face and Friends, put together by Dojoes Management and powered by MTN's lifestyle youthful brand Xtra Cool.

The concert was preceded with visit to Good Samaritan Home on Saturday, March 1, hours before the concert proper.

The tour team, comprising MTN, Dojoes Management, 2Face Idibia and retinue of artiste friends such as Sasha, Marvellous Benji and Sound Sultan among others.

2Face donated various items on behalf of MTN, which include food, clothes, shoes to the less privileged children of the home.

The African Queen crooner inspired residents of the orphanage with his words and music which he sang to their admiration.

And to the chagrin and joy of the children of the home, the mega music star, in his magnanimity, donated a sum of N100, 000 in cheque. His donation was supported by the chief executive officer of Dojoes management, Mr. Femi Ogundipe.

The concert proper on Saturday, kicked off at 4.00 p.m and was rounded off by 8.00 pm, with a party at Hexagon Night club.

And in Ibadan, the fans of the music star and MTN Xtra Cool subscribers in the rustic city were on Wednesday, March 5, thrilled to the fullest by the multiple KORA award winning star and the retinue of his star studded musical friends.

Venue was the Polo Club along Eleyele, Jericho. Most of the youths did not only enjoy the life music performance of all the artistes they went home with lots of MTN freebies.

Some of the artistes that performed in Benin on Saturday include: Sasha, Blacktribe, Marvellous Benji, Sound Sultan, Nneka from UK, Da-Natives, Zulezu, Timaya, Daneki, Stereoman, Rock Steady, W4, and Ruff, Rugged & Raw among several other local and international artistes, comedians and Djs.

Among 2Face Friends from the international arena coming to support him with their performances atthe concerts is Damian Marley, son of the legendary reggae music icon Bob Nester Marley.
